In late October 1974, Stephen King and his wife were travelling through Colorado for their vacation. They decided to stay overnight at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado in room 217. The interesting fact is that King and his wife were the only guests in the big and old building. At that time King was writing a new novel but he didn't like it. When Stephen was walking through long hotel corridors, a great idea came to his mind. He decided to write a story about a hotel full of ghosts and horrible secrets. In his book, he described the Stanley Hotel: its rooms and corridors, the music hall, and the large garden. Can you guess what room in the novel was the most dangerous and mysterious? Of course, room 217.

The Shining became one of the most popular horror books in the world. In 1997, the book was made into a mini-series. King insisted on filming it at the Stanley Hotel. Of course, the Stanley Hotel also became famous as the main scene of the novel and the series.

There's one more reason why many of King's fans often visit it. "King wrote the book, and real ghosts appeared in the hotel," they claim. So, they stay at the hotel and try to find something paranormal. The bravest ones book room 217. Then, they share their stories on the internet. Here are two of them.

"It was 12 a.m. but I wasn't sleeping. I was watching a film on TV when suddenly someone started to play the piano in the next room. I knocked on the door but no one opened it. I asked a clerk for help. When he opened the door, the room was empty! "Were you playing the piano last midnight?" I asked each guest the next morning. "No, we weren't," answered one couple, "But we heard the piano too!"

"I was reading a book in my room when some children began to cry outside. I couldn't see them from my window but I could hear their voices. Later, my husband told me there weren't any children at the hotel!"

Every month the Stanley Hotel invites people for a 5-hour excursion and exploring of paranormal activity in the building with special equipment. As a present, they give King's books to each visitor. Would you like to visit the Stanley Hotel?
